A sombre mood engulfed a family in Sachangwan village, Molo sub-county following the death of their 7-year-old pupil who was hit and killed by a vehicle belonging to the deputy head teacher of her school.
Belvin Chelangat – a class one pupil at Jamhuri primary school in Nakuru town - was knocked down at 7.30am moment after she entered the school gate in the company of her mother.
The family members speaking to the media said the vehicle was being driven by the deputy head teacher Mrs. Eunice Wangeci Muchori when the accident occurred.
It is unclear what led to the teacher knocking down Chelangat, her mother and another pupil.
Chelangat was pronounced dead upon arrival at Nakuru nursing home while her mother Mrs. Hellen Tidi and the other pupil sustained injuries.
The two have since been discharged from hospital.
According to Phiilip Koech, who is an uncle to the deceased, the school management and police should take responsibility for taking the matter lightly considering that the vehicle was released to the owner less than three hours after the accident occurred.
Sentiments echoed by the deceased aunt Emilly Owuor who called on the Ministry of Education to follow up the matter and ensure justice is done.
However, the school management notified police who arrived at the scene after which the ill fated vehicle was towed to Central police station Nakuru.
While confirming the incident, Nakuru East sub-county Education Officer Clarice Mwita said police were investigating the matter.
“I must state that indeed it is a sad incident but the police have commenced investigations on the same. The deputy head teacher has recorded a statement in relation to the incident which she termed unfortunate,” said Mwita.
Nakuru OCPD Joshua Omukatta said that the incident was reported by the school management after which police took over investigations.
The body of the deceased was taken to Valley hospital mortuary.
