A section of religious leaders in Nakuru County have faulted the government for trying to violet religious constitutions by proposing rules that will restrict religious activities that enjoy the freedom of worship provisions of the constitution.
Reverend Dr. Christine Walubenga of the Deliverance Church in Teachers estate, Nakuru County during an interview with her on Saturday, said that the proposed rules concerning the conduct and activities of religious organisations by the Attorney General Githu Muigai were contravening the constitution that allows for the freedom of worship in Kenya.
She observed that the government was failing in its duty of protecting the constitution by crafting unnecessary clauses it intends to infuse into the constitution that is clear about religion in the country. She said the government should fight crime inclusively in all social-economic institutions in the country including in religious organisations without restricting the freedom of worship.
“After crafting another damning law that violates the rights of Kenyans in the name of Security Bill, the government is on it again now targeting our churches. This is an excuse in failure to fight crime. One criminal suspect in a society cannot subject others to be criminal suspects and denied their rights,’’ said the church leader and urged Christians across the country to oppose the proposed laws.
Another Church leader in the area, Pastor Ezekiel Onditi of the Calvary Church criticised the government for trying to make Kenyans slaves of the law. He argued that religion since time immemorial has been an independent institution from all civil institutions and should be given the respect it deserves.
