Wanjiku wa Kibe as she is popularly known is the current Gatundu North MP who was elected on August 8 General Election by a Jubilee Party ticket.
Kibe was the only woman candidate in the Gatundu North race and was facing it off with the then incumbent MP Kigo Njenga, whom she defeated in the Jubilee primaries.
Others were Dominic Gicheru (independent), former MP Clement Waibara (independent), Joseph Githuka (DP), Patrick Mungai (Maendeleo Chap Chap) and John Njenga Kezia (independent).
Kibe, upon winning the Gatundu North parliamentary race, noted that her victory heralded a new promise for Gatundu North people "who have experienced a very slow development rate compared to their neighbors in Gatundu South where the president comes from".
Wanjiku is a former radio presenter at Kameme FM where she rose the ranks to become the station's boss before she was allegedly fired on the basis of non-performance.
During her heydays on Kameme, Kibe was known for her soft-spoken and motherly bits of advice on the station's mid-morning show (Canjamuka) and Sunday gospel countdown show (Ndigithu ya Kigoco).
After her decorated radio career, Kibe was to be nominated Member of County Assembly (MCA) in Kiambu County where in line with her former job moved a motion to the county assembly to establish a broadcasting unit.
The assembly approved the motion allowing the county government to start print and electronic media.
This, according to Kibe, would ensure residents had regular access to information on the operations of the County Assembly and the County Executive.
"The county media will be useful in advocacy on core development issues such as agriculture, education, health, security and sustainable environment. It will also give us enough coverage that cannot be achieved using external media," Wanjiku was quoted by the press as saying after the motion was passed.
Kibe said it was a constitutional requirement for the county government to provide information and ensure residents’ easy access to it adding that national TV stations and newspapers only gave priority to national news thus small space for county news.
She also said that vernacular stations could not cover county news as anticipated.
“Vernacular stations cover over 10 counties so they also don’t give much attention to our county issues as our people would like to hear,” she noted.
