The newly elected leadership of the Student Organisation of Maseno University (Somu) was sworn in on Friday at the graduation square.

The students who were voted in on November 20 will run the organisation without the topmost leader after initial Somu presidential aspirants failed to meet the Somu constitution requirements.

The institution is set to conduct a by-election on December 4, to have students elect their president.

Speaking to students at the main campus during the ceremony, Dr Cyprine Oduo, the returning officer, said students from Homabay and Kisumu campus shall also be allowed to take part in the exercise in two weeks time.

"The electoral commission is making arrangements for the by-election on December 4, and all campuses shall take part in the exercise," said the returning officer.

She further urged the students to maintain peace and order during the exercise.

New Somu vice-president Beth Wanyoro Waitherero, a third-year political science student urged her colleagues to cooperate with the incoming student leadership as it was committed to service their interests.

"We intend to serve your interests and with your cooperation we shall deliver," she said.

The institutions' dean of students, Kweya Opande, said he was committed to restore good relations between the students, the Maseno community and the police stressing they all needed to coexist.

He promised to organise for a football match for the students to play against the Maseno community team, the police and the institution's administration teams.

Beth Wanyoro shall serve the students organisation as acting president until a Somu president is elected.
