[Photo: Nairobi News]Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has been accused of intimidating and setting up Kenya County Government Workers’ Union (KCGWU) officials after they threatened to call a workers’ strike over delayed September salaries. This is after the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) detectives on Tuesday arrested a Nairobi county KCGWU official at a Nairobi hotel, after he was allegedly caught soliciting a bribe from Sonko’s aide. But the union dismissed the claims accusing Sonko of setting up Benson Oliang’a, the branch secretary of the Kenya County Government Workers’ Union.According to the Star, Oliang’a had asked for a kickback from the governor not to call for a strike."The governor called Oliang’a yesterday (Monday) for a meeting, but he refused to go because he was called alone. Then today, he told Oliang’a to meet his personal assistant in a hotel. When he went, the PA gave him lunch. That’s when he was arrested. The governor is setting people up. This is intimidation," KCGWU national secretary general Roba Duba said as quoted by Star newspaper.Over 13, 000 county workers have not received their September pay withacting county secretary Leboo Morintat acknowledging the same, but said he was not aware the official had been arrested, the paper adds.
