Nairobi governor Mike Sonko has defended his administration's move to close down Eden House Rehabilitation Centre in City Park, saying the facility was sitting on grabbed land.
Sonko said the proprietors of the rehab centre had been issued with fake allotment letters that were allegedly prepared by "group of cartels".
He said the cartels were led by a former Nairobi County chief officer and other senior officers suspended by the county government on graft claims.
“In the meantime we have already cancelled the fake allotment letters that were fraudulently prepared by a group of cartels led by our former chief officer, other known rogue senior officers and powerful cartel and businessmen who are behind these fraudulent dealings,” Sonko said on Monday.
Sonko said apart from the rehab, there were other public utilities that were grabbed within City Park, citing a county borehole that used to serve residents of Parklands and Westlands, a five-acre flower farm valued at Sh4.5 billion and part of the park’s market which he blamed on an unnamed businessmen.
"We have repossessed all the public amenities that had been grabbed in this place," Sonko said.
The centre's directors have since written to the governor, saying they were evicted from the house without notice, yet they had paid Sh70,000 as rent every month.
