Nairobi governor Mike Sonko has officially opened talks on the Nairobi City county water and sanitation policy bill.
Speaking through his Facebook page, the governor said the move was in line with his pledge of giving Nairobians a clean, beautiful and healthy city where water was safe, accessible, affordable and regular.
"My administration is committed to providing safe water to all the residents of Nairobi. In order to achieve this, we are working towards cutting water losses so that we can ensure supply to all households, especially the poor in the informal sector," he said.
"Water supply in Nairobi has never matched its population growth. This has generated an ever-growing deficit. Nearly half of the water distributed through the system is nonrevenue water," he added.
"This means that it is either not billed through theft or it is lost through leaking pipes and poor storage."
Water has been a key issue in Nairobi and last year the whole city had to undergo intense rationing due to a fall in water levels at Ndakaini Dam that quenches the entire city.
