Sonko said that he was concerned that the rains could reign havoc to Nairobians and cause destruction of property or even lives in the city.

Speaking through his Facebook page on Saturday, the governor said the county government was putting in place measures to ensure that any adverse effects of the rain are mitigated.

He also cautioned road users to be on the lookout and take great caution.

"We have deployed some experts to monitor situations in all areas as we are experiencing heavy rain in Nairobi. We caution motorists to be extra careful on roads," he said.

In the past years, rainy seasons in Nairobi have caused severe effects that included blockage of sewage systems, flooding of roads and drowning of residents.

In 2017, three residents of Kibera drowned in Nairobi Dam and their bodies were never found despite the authorities putting in place elaborate efforts to rescue them.
