The entrance of real estate mogul in the race for Kiambu governor seat is likely to change what had long been touted as a two-horse race between Kabogo and Waititu.

In a seemingly supportive move, Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko has reserved his support for Kiambu Governor William Kabogo's re-election, and opted to back the real estate tycoon David Ngari alias Gakuyo.

Sonko spoke his mind during the launch of Gakuyo Foundation in Thika where he presented president Uhuru Kenyatta’s Sh1 million, his deputy’s half a million and his 300,000.

Sonko was earlier backing Kabogo, including accompanying him on a few tours in the county.

“I will work closely with Gakuyo until we see the outcome of the party primaries. I am backing him because he is my friend,” the Nairobi senator said on Sunday.

The senator asked Gakuyo not to fear his contestants as it is the people who will elect their next governor.

“Concentrate on talking to Kiambu people and explain your agenda to them. If you live well with them you will definitely become the next governor,’ he said.

Sonko added, “Do not fear the big names in the race. I also stumped political giants in Makadara in 2010.”

Accompanying him was nominated Senator Fatuma Dullo.

Dullo encouraged the hopeful governor to sell his agenda to the county seeking residents’ support.

“Kiambu residents should think through and elect a God-fearing person as their governor. When you elect a leader who fears and worships God, you bring development,” she said.

Gakuyo promised to offer ‘transformative and collaborative leadership with strong emphasis on accountability and economic empowerment’ for the people of Kiambu.

“I have tried several times to seek an audience with the Governor but my attempts were futile. The last time I was at his office, I was told to write a note and say what I wanted to tell him,” Gakuyo said.
