Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko on Thursday revealed why he escaped from the Shimo La Tewa prison in 1998.According to Sonko, he escaped in order to attend the burial of his mother.Sonko made the revelation after former Nairobi governor Evans Kidero’s seeking to be enjoined in a petition by two voters, Japheth Muroko and Zacheous Okoth challenging his election was dismissed. "You stood by me throughout my childhood and school life. When I escaped from prison to attend my late mum's burial you gave me victory, and I was acquitted," Mr. Sonko said.Through his Facebook page, the governor noted that his political career has always been a servant of the people. He stated that God's mercy should be seen during the Court ruling. "Lord, you have always been fighting my battles on my behalf, It is because of you that I have never fought a losing battle throughout my life," Governor Sonko stated in a Facebook post.In the run-up to the August 8 general elections, Sonko had been accused of escaping from prison. He has, however, never talked about the matter publicly until Thursday.
