A team has been formed to fight criminal gangs in Nairobi's Central Business District.

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko on Sunday said reports reaching his office indicate criminal gangs had returned at Nairobi's CBD- wrecking havoc and stealing from unsuspecting pedestrians and motorists.

"After receiving several cases of insecurity within some sections of Nairobi CBD my office today (Sunday) formed anti-mugging squad detectives who will work closely with Kenya police to curb the situation," Sonko said.

"We have also received intelligence reports that some politicians and business people are funding youth to terrorise people. We are on the lookout and several arrests will be made forthwith."

He spoke hours after a picture went viral on social media showing well-built men mugging a woman wrestled to the ground. The incident happened outside Nation Centre along Kimathi Street.

Kenyans have been accusing Sonko of failing to eliminate crime in the city within 100 days after his swearing-in as he had promised.
