While Nairobi governor Mike Sonko appears to be sharing his generous side with the common mwananchi, it is not everyone who has bought the idea.

This December Sonko has been on a spree of charity, visiting the less fortunate and distributing household goods including food.

However, a section of Nairobi residents have taken a swipe at the governor, with many criticising him for supporting the handout mentality among citizens.

Using the various social media platforms, they asked the governor to change his tact of combating societal problems.

"Tafuta mbinu ya kuokoa wakenya sio handouts. [Look for a way of helping Kenyans, not handouts]. Mr sonko you steal millions of shillings from them and you're pretending to be loyal," Evans Otieno criticised.

"Handouts won't take us anywhere. One bag of unga today I won't have it after two weeks. We need infrastructure. We need Nairobi back. Stop this bragging of how you are helping individuals and give us Nairobi back," said Ken Goji

Angie Mich Renson took another angle, blaming the governor for being a 'tribalist' in the practice of charity.

"I haven't seen you help me or anyone closer to me. Or anyone I know from a distance. Could it be tribal or? Weee wacha nitupe kura yangu. [Let me throw away my vote]"

Angie's sentiments were echoed by Ben Odola on a different platform:

"Sonko why do you like helping one community only and neglect other communities. Why can't you be a leader to all, kindly," he said.

Another Faebook user Ong'aro Conrald asked Sonko to go for youth empowerment.

"Mr Governor Mike Sonko empower the common people so that you don't need to buy them gifts because they will afford to cater for their daily needs," he said.
