Nairobi Governor-elect Mike Sonko has issued a stern warning to a group of people at City Hall soliciting for bribes.

In a statement to the press, Sonko warned those with fake claims and the cartels to keep off before the long arm of the government gets hold of them.

He cautioned Nairobi residents from being duped by fraudsters claiming to be his staff and asking for bribes to supposedly speed up contract payment and influence the awarding of fresh tenders.

“It has come to my attention that some individuals purporting to be my staff are soliciting bribes from contractors and suppliers to influence speedy processing of their pending payments.”

“I wish to categorically state here that I have not mandated anyone whatsoever to either solicit or follow up on any pending payment at City Hall,” Sonko said.

The Governor-elect said that as soon as he is sworn into office, pending payments for contractors and suppliers will be cleared.

Sonko noted that all pending claims on contractual agreements with the county government will be scrutinised by a competent team of auditors to eliminate fraudulent payments.

“Once am sworn in office, I will put in place elaborate process that will ensure genuine contractors and suppliers with pending payments are taken care of,” he added.
