Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko has accused powerful figures close to the President of frustrating his political ambitions.

The Nairobi gubernatorial hopeful alleged that President Uhuru Kenyatta’s aides and some powerful Cabinet Secretaries were trying to block him from seeking governorship.

“They are now intimidating me and using State organs to deny me vital documents needed for clearance in order to vie. A powerful Cabinet secretary even threatened to assassinate me,” the Senator was quoted by the Standard. He added, “The President’s men have approached me many times to drop my bid but I have refused.”He named legislators supporting former Gatanga MP Peter Kenneth’s bid to unseat Governor Kidero as some of his political enemies. The senator was last week frustrated as he tried to acquire a Certificate of Good Conduct from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).Speaking in an interview with Citizen TV, Sonko also named Jubilee Party vice chairman David Murathe and Interior Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho as those frustrating his gubernatorial bid.In a response, the Jubilee Party official said, “The fact is, nobody has any intention to block anyone. The man is very dishonest because he knows that some of us even went out of our way to find out from the DCI (Directorate of Criminal Investigations) why they cleared him to vie (in the past) but are now delaying to do so.”“Nothing stops him from running as an independent candidate,” said Murathe.Sonko said he will not relinquish his ambitions to become Nairobi’s next governor.
