Sonko on Saturday opened blocked water pipes leading to Mathare and blamed the blockage of an unspecified cartel that breaks the supply for selfish gains.

Speaking through his Facebook page, the governor said that there were water cartels planning to sabotage his service delivery to the people of Mathare but expressed optimism that his administration would quash their efforts.

"Cartel's plans to sabotage my administration by tapping water and blocking main water pipes supplying water to Mathare residents have failed. Now Mathare residents will have access to clean water. The operation will be extended to other areas," he said.

In his manifesto before the August 8 polls, Sonko rode on the promise that he would help the poor afford a livelihood in the city.
