Nairobi governor Mike Sonko has opposed the planned swearing of Nyeri deputy governor Mutahi Kahiga after the untimely demise of governor Wahome Gakura.Speaking in Nairobi on Tuesday, Sonko said that it was wrong for deputy governors to be sworn immediately after the death of their bosses.“This idea of deputy governors being sworn in immediately after somebody dies should stop. We need to have constitutional amendments to change this. We should hold a referendum,” said Sonko.Sonko stated that there should be a mourning period before one is sworn in.The Nairobi county boss was speaking at Serena Hotel where the council of governors was meeting after the demise of Dr. Gakuru.Mutahi is expected to be sworn in immediately in order to avoid a power vacuum in the devolved unit.The governor died on Tuesday in a grisly road accident at Kabati in Muranga county.He was heading to Nairobi for several media engagements.
