Nairobi governor Mike Sonko has announced plans to reduce parking fees by 30 per cent in the next financial year.
“I will table in the County Assembly through the 2017/18 Finance bill the new proposals so that a new way of handling the transport industry is applied,” he said while addressing stakeholders in the matatu industry in Nairobi yesterday.
He blamed the fragmentation of the Savings and Credit Cooperative Societies (saccos) belonging to public service vehicle owners on the lack of space.
“Our intention is to have an organized transport system in the county where all value-chain players are benefiting,” he said. Matatu Owners Association (MOA) chairman Simon Kimutai said PSVs’ biggest challenges are disorganized and corrupt Inspectorate section as well as few and congested holding areas for picking and dropping off passengers.
Sonko in his re-election pledges said that he intends to reduce congestion in the city.
