Sonko made the revelations when he met with Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka on Tuesday.

Sonko said Governor Evans Kidero failed to fix problems such as clogged drainage systems and flooding after rains.

"Engineers qualified ... we are trying our best," he said.

Sonko further revealed the reason why some people were fighting his regime.

"The only problem is corruption because garbage collectors have been [doing this work] since 2011. Our hands are tied by laws; you cannot just come in with new contractors ... as we wait for recycling plants in Dandora, we need a temporary solution," said Sonko.

He continued: "I admit this is a very big headache. The population is 6.5 million during the day and five million at night. I am apologising and admitting that there are challenges in Nairobi. A committee was formed ... we are trying to decongest Nairobi and make it clean," said Sonko.

Sonko had earlier issued a statement apologizing for the flooding mess.
