Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has defended part of his Jamuhuri Day speech that sparked heated debate online.

During the speech, Sonko erroneously recognized former First Lady Mama Ngina Kenyatta instead of First Lady Margaret Kenyatta.

"Your Excellency Uhuru Kenyatta, Your Excellency Mama Ngina Kenyatta, Your Excellency William Ruto," read part of Sonko's speech.

An excited Deputy President William Ruto could not hold his breath notably following the mix in Sonko's speech.

But on his Facebook, Sonko says he was making reference to Margaret Kenyatta, through her daughter Ngina Kenyatta.

"President Uhuru Kenyatta has a daughter by the name Ngina Kenyatta so I was attributing to the presence of her mother in the midst of guests," he said.

But a section of users demanded that he 'accepts' the blunder and move on, adding that the speech was in reference to older Mama Ngina instead of Margret Kenyatta.

Mama Ngina was First Lady of Kenya between 1963-78 upon the death of his husband and founding father, Jomo Kenyatta.
