The County government of Nairobi has announced plans to construct two modern markets for hawkers in the City.

Governor Mike Sonko said the markets will permanently accommodate the hawkers who have been a menace in the city centre.

"The presence of hawkers in the streets, alleys and pavements of Nairobi will soon be a thing of the past," Sonko said on his social media accounts.

The construction of the two markets; Mwariro in Kariokor and Karandini in Dagoretti, is expected to begin this month, according to Sonko.

The project will be funded by the World Bank which has committed Sh650 million.

The county boss said his administration has waived all fees and approval charges towards the project.

"The World Bank has given us billions of shillings to build the hawkers markets with ample parking," Sonko reported as part of his New Year's message.

He said the county government would involve all relevant stakeholders in the implementation of the project.

Last year, the county revealed plans to acquire Kenya Planters Cooperative Union (KPCU) building near Wakulima market to be transformed into a hawkers market.
