Deputy President William Ruto will face dire consequences if he fails to support Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko for the Nairobi Gubernatorial seat ahead of the 2017 elections.
Sonko has warned that Ruto will suffer "political repercussions" if he backs Water Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa for the position.
Speaking at Reresik in Kericho sub-county on Sunday, Sonko said that Ruto stands a better chance of becoming the president in 2022 if he supports him in the forthcoming election.
“My candidature as Nairobi governor has a high chance of seeing DP Ruto clinch the presidential seat in 2022 elections and not any other candidate,” Sonko said as quoted by kenyans.co.ke.
He advised the DP not to be tricked into supporting Wamalwa as some politicians are out to mislead him.
“There is a clique of political conmen in Nairobi lying to Mr Ruto that if I become the governor of Nairobi next year, I would hinder his ambitions to become president in 2022 by running. Those are liars who must be condemned and be defeated at all costs,” Sonko said.
The DP has caught the flak in recent weeks for allegedly supporting Wamalwa. A section of Jubilee-allied MPs in Nairobi has already confronted him asking him to drop the bid.
Ruto has however not commented on the issue which has threatened the coalition’s existence especially in and around Nairobi politics.
