Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has said the county government is in the process of purchasing fire engines and ambulances for all the 17 constituencies in the city.
The governor on Thursday said this will help respond to disasters faster and more efficiently.
Sonko who spoke when he met with senior officers from the security, compliance and disaster management department said the vehicles will operate at all times.
"We are planning to end the habit of late arrival in scenes where disasters or accidents happen and this starts with having necessary mechanism needed," he said.
This follows the recent cases of school fires, including the September 2 arson at Moi Girls’ School Nairobi where nine girls were killed. Last week, a fire broke out at St George’s Girls’ High School and gutted the dining hall and kitchen.
In a past interview, his deputy governor Polycarp Igathe said the county would set up a plan to have old firefighters retire to ensure they create opportunities for youths.
