Nairobi governor Mike Sonko has now ordered county inspectorate officers to arrest illegal dumpers in a move aimed at cleaning the city.

In a statement in his official Twitter account Tuesday, Sonko who says that the directive implementation will fully take effect Tuesday midnight has also urged citizens to assist in the initiative by reporting any similar activity via a provided hotline number.

''I have authorised my inspectorate department to arrest anyone doing illegal dumping starting tonight. Its our responsibility as Nairobians to ensure that our streets are clean. If you spot any illegal dumping kindly inform me through 0722886600,'' reads the statement in part.

The governor has however accused business owners of being contributing largely to the dirty CBD streets, saying that the trend has been fueled by hotel proprietors who poorly dispose their waste.

''Just realised that illegal dumping around the CBD is done by business owners especially the hotel industry. They pay street kids to pick up garbage from the back doors of the hotels and dump them along the lanes in the city,'' he says in another tweet.
