On Tuesday night, more than 200 street families were moved from the CBD in an operation carried out by the county's Environment Rapid Response Team.

Governor Mike Sonko said the programme was in line with his campaign pledge to ensure the children are taken out of the streets.

“As a county government we promised to remove all street families from our streets, we have started an operation in line with my campaign manifesto that promised rehabilitation of street families in order to secure their future,” said Sonko, as quoted by Business Daily.

The county boss said the rescued children were taken to orphanages and rehabilitation centres where they will receive treatment for addiction.

“The rescued street children will receive treatment of their drug addiction in the rehabilitation centres and be enrolled back to school,” he said, adding that the older ones will be trained on life skills to help them live decently.

The Jubilee Governor said the initiative to rehabilitate those living on the streets will be continuous under his administration.

Many residents have blamed presence of the families on the streets for the increase in petty crime and muggings in the city.
