Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko has told his supporters not to rule him out of the Machakos gubernatorial contest during the August general election.
Sonko who spoke during an interview at a local radio station on Friday said he still has the option of contesting against Machakos governor Alfred Mutua if the Nairobi Jubilee Party primary elections will not favour him.
He spoke a day after two Jubilee factions- one led by Sonko himself and former Starehe MP Margaret Wanjiru on one hand against the one led by former Gatanga MP Peter Kenneth clashed at Kasarani indoor stadium on Thursday.
The Kasarani meeting had been convened to appoint the Nairobi county elections board by the Jubilee secretariat.
It, however, ended up in chaos after two rival groups of aspirants and their supporters fought.
The two factions- Team Nairobi (under Sonko and Margaret Wanjiru) and Team Peter Kenneth clashed following accusations by Team Nairobi that the secretariat had a list of preferred members that would represent the elections board.
"It is still early but I want to tell my supporters that in case of anything I will consult them and my sister (Margaret Wanjiru) to decide on the next course of action," Sonko said.
The interviewer had asked him to clear the air on rumours that he was warming up for the Machakos gubernatorial contest.
In mid-2016, social media reports indicated that Sonko had met Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka and that the meeting's main agenda was to convince the flamboyant senator to vie against governor Mutua in Machakos.
Mutua who was elected on a Wiper party ticket in 2013 part ways with Kalonzo and formed Maendeleo Chap Chap party which he intends to ride on in defending his seat.
