Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has said the county government plans to roll-out a comprehensive retirement plan for the city workers.
Sonko who was speaking at Uhuru Park during the Labour Day celebrations on Tuesday said his administration will not force any worker to retire no matter the circumstances.
"I have approved that Nairobi City County Government and the workers union begin discussions on rolling out voluntary early retirement," he said at the event attended by opposition leader Raila Odinga.
"We will continue to work hard to make Nairobi the city of choice; to invest, work and live in," he added.
The county boss said the retirement exercise will be voluntary and no one will be forced to retire.
Nairobi County is among counties in the country with the highest number of workers and the county chief says close to Sh12 billion goes to paying salaries.
He said Nairobi had embarked on recruiting staff that offer essential services including 800 constables and 200 firemen.
"All our staff have comprehensive health insurances for them and for their families," the former Makadara MP said.
He also said as the city's governor he has closely been work with over 13,000 workers and they can all confirm that he has been paying their salaries on time.
