Over 15,000 Nairobi county workers are on the verge of unemployment following the current work strike.
Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko criticized the workers union officials for failing to come to a consensus with their county counterparts.
“It is therefore very unfortunate for Mr. Olunga to purport to threaten my administration to pay up or face industrial action. This is unacceptable and never shall I bow to such unwarranted pressure but shall follow the law to the letter,” Sonko said in a statement as quoted by The Star.
According to Benson Olunga, the secretary general of the county workers union, workers had made plans to put down their tools if the county failed to pay Sh18 billion worth of salaries for its members.
However, the Nairobi governor made it clear that he will not buckle to the pressure.
"Olunga must stop seeking relevance having failed to properly represent the interest of the county workers but to accept that no amount of threats or blackmail can deter me from following laid down procedures as far as human resource management is concerned,” Sonko added.
