The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has given the government a three-day-ultimatum from Monday next week to pay teachers.

Speaking on Thursday at Mwongori Secondary School in Mekene ward, Borabu Sub County in Nyamira County during a prize giving ceremony, the union secretary General Wilson Sossion, accused the government of laxity for delaying to send salaries to teacher accounts.

He said after the three day ultimatum, they will consider an appropriate action to take if TSC shall have not acted swiftly.

"I will write a letter to TSC on Monday next week and if they will have not complied by Thursday and send salaries to teachers. Then, we will take an appropriate action," said Sossion.

Sossion also challenged the government to employ more teachers to curb shortage in schools.

"We ask the government to employ 100,000 more teachers to solve the shortage, in order to improve performance in our schools," he added.

Mwongori was among the best performing schools in the county scoring a mean of 8.2 points in last year's KCSE. According to the school's principal, Charles Onyari, they target a mean of 9 points in this year.

In a different function at Hema Secondary School in Nyaribari Masaba Constituency, former LSK chairman Okong’o Omogeni challenged the government to employ adequate teachers, as one of the measures to improving performance in the country.

He said scarcity of teachers has always been a challenge to most of schools performing dismally poor.

He was the chief guest in the prize giving ceremony to the school that posted impressive performance in last year's KCSE, whereby it got 9.2 points withal students attaining a C+, the minimum entry to University.
