Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) chairman Mudzo Nzili has finally agreed to go on leave.
Nzili began his terminal leave on Friday ahead of his April retirement.
The union has pushed to June a by-election to replace Nzili and his first vice chairman Samson Kaguma after it was earlier planned to be held next month (December).
The outgoing chairman said that the thorny issues of retirement and when to conduct elections had been conclusively dealt with.
“Upon attaining age 60, one shall cease to hold office. My deputy and I shall attain the mandatory age of 60 in 2018. The bone of contention we have resolved was for us to be effectively replaced,” he said.
According to the union's secretary general Wilson Sossion, the retiring chair and his deputy will attend the Annual Delegates Conference December this year where they will deliver their farewell message to teachers.
“Between now and June, we shall be dealing with the transitional issues so that we can now and in future handle retirements and transitions in a decent and more organised manner,” he said.
Wycliffe Omucheyi was appointed acting chairman.
