Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary General Wilson Sossion has asked the government to form a special police force unit to protect teachers.
According to Sossion, the special unit should be deployed in security risk-prone areas to provide teachers and learners with the necessary security.
In a statement released on Sunday after terrorist killed three teachers in Wajir, Sossion said that the government should be at the forefront of ensuring security to the areas affected by insecurity.
He explained that the creation of a special police unit would bring an end the suffering which teachers go through in their workstations.
“We call upon the government to consider heightening security to teachers, learners as well as school property. That can only be achieved by creating a special police division to undertake the task,” he said.
The Secretary-General further urged the government to deploy local teachers in areas affected so as to minimize security threats.
On Friday, Qarsa Primary School was attacked by suspected Al Shabaab militia where three non-local teachers were shot dead.
The incident raised concern over the security of teachers from Kenya Union of Post Primary Teachers(KUPPET) and KNUT officials, urging the government to provide more security to teachers in such areas.
