Speaking in Chitago on Thursday, Albert Oino said many parents within the region were assigning their children to sell goods, attend to their animals, work in sugar cane firms and offer services to other residents in the neighbourhood during school hours and odd hours.

He claimed that Riosiri Market and sugarcane firms in South Mugirango were the most notorious with child labour where children are forced to do hard jobs.

Oino asked the relevant bodies to look into the matter and ensure the children who were engaged in business at market places go to school.

He said that children as young as ten years were being forced by their parents to hawk goods and even offer services to customers who can expose the children to dangers like harassment and mental torture.

He further asked chiefs and their assistants to arrest the parents who hinder their children from attending school by subjecting them to child labour as a way of curbing child labour in the area.

“We want a developed region and with the increase in child labour that won’t be achieved at all despite how hard we work on the same,” said Oino.

He called upon the community to help the authorities identify those who engage in the vice.
