Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Beatrice Elachi has been suspended by the county public service board.
Elachi was suspended together with the County Clerk Jacob Ngwele.
According to Majority Leader in the Assembly Abdi Guyo, the two were suspended to allow for investigations into corruption allegations.
“As a board, we have resolved that Elachi and Ngwele should step aside pending investigations,” said Guyo as quoted by Standard.
The decision to suspend the Speaker was backed by the minority in the house, who noted that the war on corruption should not be selective.
"Our stand as the Opposition is that corruption, whether from the Executive or county assembly, will not be condoned and anyone found culpable should give way for investigations," Minority Chief Whip, Peter Imwatok told the Standard.
On her part, Elachi noted that she was a victim of a witchhunt by the Public Service Board.
“I know I’m fighting an old board which is very adamant. If there was truth to their clams, they should have raised the issue back in February. Why wait till now?” Elachi posed.
The suspension came a day before a section of Members of County Assembly (MCAs) had agreed to table an impeachment motion against the speaker.
At the heart of the investigations, is the purchase of the speaker's Karen residence worth millions of shillings.
