Senate Speaker Ken Lusaka called on the Sarah Serem-led Commission, to rise salaries of the Speakers, after they lamented that their current pay was low.
Speaking during an induction exercise of the speakers in Mombasa, over the weekend, Lusaka asked SRC to increase the pay, for the speakers to get motivated in their duties.During the meeting, Trans Nzoia County Assembly Speaker Joshua Werunga proposed that speakers be allowed to handle assembly finances, with Kitui Speaker George Ndotto, arguing that they are usually paid a quarter of whay National Assembly Speaker receives.
"The speakers of Parliament are paid Sh1 Million yet we get just a quarter of that. Poor paykills our morale because we are overworking," he said.
SRC reviewed speakers salaries from Sh350,000 to Sh259,875. Their deputies were reduced by Sh24,000 from Sh240,000.
