National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi was elected to represent East Africa as a member of the Standing Committee of the Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of the Commonwealth. He will be part of the 54 Member Standing Committee for a two-year term until 2018.
Muturi was elected in Seychelles during the 24th Conference of the Speakers and Presiding Officers of the Commonwealth Countries (CSPOC). The Speakers and Presiding Officers of the Commonwealth Countries was formed in 1969 and currently has 74 members from 52 member staes. They are all attaending the conference.
The conference will have Justin Muturi and his senate counterpart Kenneth Lusaka representing Kenya. They will meet fellow speakers and Presiding Officers of Commonwealth. They will discuss how to better enhance bilateral relations between their respective Parliaments.
The inter-parliamentary conference is held every two years with the aim of maintain and fostering fairness and impartiality by presiding officers and house speakers. It also promotes understanding and knowledge of various forms of parliamentary democracy. The final result is to develop parliamentary institutions.
