National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi wants the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee to conclude the vetting of Chief Justice nominee David Maraga on Wednesday next week.
According to Daily Nation, Muturi wants the committee to also state when the approval hearings will be held.
“I cannot over-emphasise the need to expedite this process of appointment of a substantive Chief Justice, considering that there is a vacancy in this position and in that of the Deputy Chief Justice at a time when the substantive office holders ought to perform certain statutory obligations,” said Muturi added as quoted by the Daily Nation.
The Chief Justice position was left vacant after Willy Mutunga opted for early retire in June while that of that of the DCJ became vacant after Justice Kalpana Rawal obtained the mandatory retirement for judges which is 70.
If approved by Parliament and subsequently appointed by the President, Maraga will become the second Chief Justice after the promulgation of the 2010 constitution and will be President of the Supreme Court and head of the Judiciary.
