Nakuru County Speaker Susan Kihika has directed the county assembly’s vetting committee to investigate academic qualifications of the Trade and Tourism CeC Edith Kimani.
Kihika also directed the committee to report back its finding to the county assembly for further action.
This follows a petition by a Nakuru businessman, Charles Munjuge that was tabled on Thursday at the county assembly through the speaker.
The petition by Munjuge wants Kimani impeached for presenting unaccredited academic papers to secure her post at the county government.
Kimani holds a degree in hotel management from a college in Australia, the Australia International Hotel School that is not recognised locally by the Ministry of Education.
According to the petitioner, Kimani holds office illegally and wants the county assembly to relieve her of her duties.
The petitioner further argues that Kimani violated the constitution and is not eligible to hold the office due to incompetence of her academic papers.
The petition was accompanied by a letter from the Commission for Education (CHE) showing that the Australia International Hotel School is not accredited by National Registrar of Higher Education in Australia.
However, the move to have Kimani investigated and impeached was opposed by nominated MCA Margaret Wanjiku who accused the speaker of tabling the petition and said that it was not necessary to vet her.
“It is unfair to subject Kimani to another vetting because she passed the first vetting,” said Wanjiku.
She said that officer has carried her duties well and the question of her academic papers does not warrant another vetting.
