The introduction of speed guns along the Naivasha–Nairobi highway has seen the fatality rates on the road reduce by 79 per cent over the last three years, an official has said. National traffic commandant Charlton Mureithi said that the significant rates were an indication that the road safety campaigns extensively carried out on along the road were working. He insisted that they were going to start a crackdown on the school buses which carry excess students, citing that any child above five years needed to occupy a seat on their own. “The law is clear. Any two children who are over five years but below twelve years count as a passenger. It is upon the school management to ensure that the children are transported safely,” he added. In his speech, which was read by Naivasha deputy traffic commandant Thomas Oseko, he insisted than the school administrations and management should adhere to the law that stipulates drivers should not drive for more than eight hours continuously. “We have had cases where accidents were due to fatigue or overworking of the drivers,” he said. Mureithi pointed out that they were also going to look into the equipment used in manufacture of the vehicles used to transport students. He was addressing an event, dubbed RS10, which is a road safety campaign in primary schools located along the highway.
