The farmers said they have been delaying to harvest the cane because middlemen pay them too little.
On Tuesday, while speaking in Kisii town where she sells chopped sugarcane Mary Moraa said she ventured fully into sugarcane farming in 2016 but the county is taking too long to set up the factory.
“We have been incurring losses when transporting cane to market and middlemen pay us too little. The county should hasten the construction of the factory to help us earn from our farming,” she said.
She appealed to farmers in the county to continue growing sugarcane and push the county to set up the factory.
“There are hopes that the factory will be built. Farmers should continue growing sugarcane to enjoy profits once the factory starts operations,” she said.
