An eyewitness Joseph Kamau, a bodaboda operator, said that the driver was speeding but failed to control the car before hitting the motorcycles from behind.

“The driver may be under the influence of alcohol because he could have avoided the accident,” said Kamau whose motor cycle was badly damaged.

Confirming the incident, Nakuru OCPD Bernard Kioko said the accident occurred at Kenyatta Avenue when the speeding car veered off the road crashing into the parked motorcycles outside Merica Hotel.

“The car was speeding and in the course it crashed at the packed motor cycles. Investigations have been launched to know what led to the accident,” said Kioko.

He added, “Police are holding the driver of the ill-fated car to ascertain if he was driving under the influence of alcohol as it was alleged by the bodaboda operators.”

Kioko urged motorists to be careful when driving at congested places to avoid causing incidents.

“Drivers should exercise extra caution when driving within the CBD to avoid causing accidents,” said Kioko.

He added that tough action would be taken against drivers flouting traffic rules.

The injured pedestrians were taken at Nakuru Provincial Hospital for treatment.
