A new survey shows that 32% -- three out of 10 Kenyans -- say the fear of reprisal from the attacker is the main reason why people do not report crimes to the police.
However, of all the other reasons given, almost all of them touch on the police response itself, meaning that 60% of Kenyans --six out of 10 Kenyans -- think that the police are the major cause of crimes not being reported.
The Twaweza’s flagship, Sauti za Wananchi mobile phone survey shows that 21% fear being asked for a bribe, while 16% said police either won't listen or care.
Eleven percent said the police will not act while 6% said the police could be involved in the crime or assault.
Lack of police presence station nearby was the other reason which had 4%.
Others are the fear of the police at 1%, and the fear of becoming a suspect in the crime at 1%.
The survey was conducted between August 15 to September 6, and involved 1,331 respondents .
