Squatter living in Gichagi area near Kenya Industrial Training Institute Friday chased away "strangers" suspected to be land developers for surveying the area.
The squatters, armed with crude weapons threatened to attack the land developer who was in company of other people believed to be land surveyors for allegedly trying to take away the land which is home to close to 20 poor families.
It is reported that the squatters ganged up with youth from Teachers estate and dared the developers to continue surveying the slum estate land.
Jacob Musila a boda boda taxi rider who operates in Teachers estate said that the villagers accused the developer of trying to grab the land and render the poor families homeless.
According to the source the angry villagers stoned the developer's vehicle while ordering him to leave and never to return.
He said trouble started at around 2pm when a few villagers noticed a grey land cruiser parked in the slums and later five people emerged from it and started going around sections of the area.
"The villagers mobilised each other and armed themselves before approaching the developers. They didn’t bother to ask them who they were because that was not the first time they had encountered land grabbers," said Musila.
The squatters, believe to be descendants of former white settler's employees are said to have lived on the piece of land since 1963 when the country got independence. They are said to have secured title deeds with the help of Kenya Land Alliance and Muungano Trust a local land advocacy group.
