Hired youth demolish structures put up by squatters at Nguu Tatu in Mombasa county. [Photo/The Star] Hundreds of squatters at Nguu Tatu in Kisauni constituency, Mombasa County are faced with forcible eviction following a land dispute with a private developer.
The developer armed with a court order intends to erect a perimeter wall on the controversial 60-acre land that will render over 500 families homeless.
The squatters on Monday staged a peaceful demonstration to protest the move and vowed not to honor the court order.
Through their spokesperson Mr Martin Chiponda, the squatters appealed to the National Land Commission (NLC) to come to their rescue and save them from being evicted.
“Some of us have lived here for over 30 years and have nowhere else to go,” said Chiponda.
The land in dispute is said to belong to Bandari SACCO after it was allegedly bought from the previous owner, Hussein Dairy Farm. Chiponda warned that affecting the order could lead to chaos as they were not ready to vacate the land.
According to the squatters, Hussein Dairy Farm allowed them to occupy the land saying such disputes should not be resolved through courts.
They accused the Mombasa County government of doing little to halt attempts to evict them. Kisauni MP Ali Mbogo said both the county and national governments should find an amicable solution to the problem.
Mbogo asked the developer to stop plans to erect a perimeter wall on the disputed land until the matter is fully resolved.
