Parents of a secondary school in Githunguri in Kiambu County took to the streets on Monday protesting the transfer of the school’s principal.
St Joseph Boys’ High School parents, who matched from the school to the area’s education offices, are demanding the reinstatement of school principal Moses Muiruri who was transferred to Kaheti boys in Mukurwe-ini in Nyeri.
According to PTA chairman, Captain Paul Karume, their concern is that Muiruri, who he said have transformed their school, did not fall in the category under the Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’ said should be transferred.
The chairman of the BOM, Martin Mburu said the transfer of Muiruri came just when the school’s discipline and performance were improving, adding that the regular transfers of principals had denied the 60-year old school a chance to improve.
“Four years ago, the school was closed more than five times due to discipline related cases, and cases of drugs among the students were rampant while the performance was deteriorating,” said Mburu.
However, during Mr. Muiruri’s tenure, he said discipline and performance improved such that in last year’s national examination their school was ranked the top in Githunguri sub-county.
Area Director of Education Charles Njeru and TCS officer in charge of human resource Ms. Damaris Kabaiku promised to forward the matter to the relevant offices for possible solutions. However, parents demand the Principal to be restored saying failure to which they will push for his demand to TSC National office until their grievances will be heard.
