Senator Hassan Omar has become the latest Mombasa gubernatorial aspirant to be cleared by the IEBC to contest in the August 8 elections.
Accompanied by his running mate Linda Shuma, Omar who is vying on a Wiper ticket was given the nod to contest by the electoral body after presenting his nomination papers at the Kenya School of Government on Friday.Omar’s clearance came just hours after Jubilee’s Suleiman Shahbal alongside his running mate Ananiah Mwaboza was given the green light to contest.On Thursday, incumbent Governor Hassan Joho passed the first hurdle in his quest for a second term in office after being cleared despite the questions surrounding his academic qualifications.Also cleared was Nyali MP Hezron Awiti who is vying on a Vibrant Democratic Party ticket among other aspirants who are contesting as independents.Following the clearance of the four main contenders for the seat, a stage has now been set for a major political showdown in the race to control the port county.
