The government has been challenged to put in place policies that will curb importation and sale of sub-standard goods.
Speaking at a Naivasha hotel on Thursday, Kenya Cables Network Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Njoroge Kahungi said there is an alarming influx of substandard goods in the market.
He raised concern over the poor quality of cables, which are being sold in the country. Kahungi said that the government must move with speed and regulate the cable industry.
He said that the poor quality of cables has led to an increase in frequent fires and other disasters.
“The government must put in place policies to protect the consumer,” he added.
The CEO said that the invasion of fake cable suppliers has seen the market go down. He asked consumers to be extra careful when purchasing cables.
Kahungi said that the government has a duty to protect the consumers and that the cable industry needs to be streamlined for fair competition.
“The industry is losing billions of shillings annually because of the sale of poor quality counterfeit cables,” the CEO explained.
He indicated that awareness campaigns will be carried out to educate consumers on the need of buying quality cables.
