[Photo|Lee Kinyanjui]The long elusive dream of having an Airport is finally a reality, Nakuru County Governor Lee Kinyanjui has said.This has been made possible after he held a meeting with the following multi sectoral agencies on Wednesday:- Kenya Defence Forces team led by Colonel Ndirangu Kenya Airforce- Ministry of Transport, Infrastructure and Housing team led by Mr P. Nitia- Kenya Civil Aviation Authority team led by P. Munyao- Kenya Airport Authority team led by E. WekesaThe team briefed the governor on the possibilities of opening up the Kenya Defence Forces Airstrip Lanet for public use."Lanet Airstrip is 1.7 kms long and 15 mtrs wide which can be improved to accommodate big, heavy commercial and cargo aeroplanes," he said.It's was agreed on the need to have an Airport in place to create an alternative airport for diversion of flights from JKIA, boosting of tourism industry in Nakuru where there are tourist attraction sites like Lake Nakuru, Menengai crater, the flower industry in Naivasha which form 80 per cent of the cargo freight at JKIA.Speaking after the meeting, Kinyajui said the move is a multi sectoral approach from national government departments and County Government of Nakuru to improve the airstrip to an international airport with a runway of 3kms.They also agreed that a report on technical issues on the design for the airport and the costing for improvement of the airstrip be availed on the first week of January 2018.
