Limuru Sub-county administration has been asked to urgently address and intervene over the high number of youths abusing alcohol and other drugs in Ngenia village.
Speaking at Ngenia High School on Sunday, Limuru Elders’ Welfare Association Chairman Morrison Njenga said that many youths are abusing alcohol in the village.
He added that there is need for leaders in the sub-county to immediately find ways of addressing the problem.
“I want to ask the sub-county administration to initiate solutions to this problem, our teenagers are being consumed by alcohol,” said Njenga.
The elder said that alcoholism has seen many young people indulge in crime, prostitution, rape and sodomy.
He further observed that the future of the village is unpredictable if young people will continue to abuse alcohol and other drugs.
He also asked the county government to create forums where youths across the county will be sensitised on the effects of drug abuse.
The elder indicated that drug abuse has become rife, blaming it on rising unemployment among the teenagers.
At the same time, the elder lashed out at parents who he accused of failing to take up their responsibilities, adding that most parents have neglected their children, who easily fall into crime.
Njenga added that parents are obsessed with their work at the expense of what their children are going saying the situation needs to change.
“I blame parents who have neglected their children and have no interests in what they do,” he said, adding that cases of teenage girls getting pregnant are on the rise.
