The UK's Mombasa consulate which was closed down in 2014 amid security concerns, will now be open daily with those who want to apply for visas free to do so on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

British High Commissioner to Kenya Nic Hailey, who presided over the reopening on Tuesday, said the consulate will endeavor to offer quality services.

"The centre offers convenience for customers who would otherwise have to travel to the capital to apply," said Hailey.

Governors Ali Joho(Mombasa), Isa Timammy (Lamu) and John Mruttu (Taita Taveta) have also lauded the move, saying that it would improve business activities in the region and also create jobs.

Heritage Group of Hotels CEO Mohamed Hersi also welcomed the move saying it will ease the process of getting the visa.

"We are looking at enhancing a good relationship between Kenya and UK. Mombasa residents are once again able to apply for the document like in the old days," he said.

He added that they are also lobbying to have direct flights from Mombasa to London.
