Irungu said that human rights play an important role in safeguarding the rights of people especially when violated by police.

Irungu on Tuesday said that human rights are the watchdog of the public.

“Human rights groups should remain firm and help fight and condemn injustices committed by people who are supposed to be guarding them,” he said on Phone.

The Kiambu speaker said that the Kenyan constitution allows for activism so long as it is done within the confines of the law.

While condemning extrajudicial killings allegedly being committed by some police officers, Irungu said that time has come for the government to cleanse the police force.

The Kiambu speaker said that police officers are mandated by the constitution to protect life and not to eliminate.

The speaker further asked Kenyans not to shy away from reporting when their rights are infringed.

He said that every citizen is protected by the constitution and that the constitution does not allow for mistreatment and violation of human rights.

The Assembly speaker was speaking in relation to the killing of lawyer Willie Kimani, his client Josphat Mwenda and river Joseph Muiruri who are allegedly said to have been killed by police officers. He called for justice for the three saying that those behind the killing should face the law.
