Ruiru lawmaker Esther Gathongo wants the government to establish a special development kitty for widows and single mothers.

The MP states that widows and single mothers in the county are facing serious challenges and that providing them with funds will reduce poverty levels.

In an address to Gathongo addressed members of the Solace widow Group said that the government has the responsibility to cater for all its citizens.

“My request is to both the county and the national governments to consider establishing a kitty for widows and single mothers,” said the lawmaker.

Gathango noted that the number of widows and single mothers is steadily rising in Ruiru and adjacent towns.

She added that some families have resulted into crime in order to provide for the children and themselves.

Gathongo said that empowering such people will not only curb poverty but also give them chance to see life positively.

Meanwhile, the MP wants women in the area to embrace a saving and banking culture. She said that through savings women can start any business enterprise of their choice.

She observed that saving requirements in many financial institutions are friendly hence the need to save.

The MP vowed to initiate more programmes that will empower and improve the dignity and living standards of women.
